Rightside Way Monologue
You’ve all heard the famous quotation from Sir Edmund Burke that “the only thing
necessary for evil to triumph if for good men to do nothing.”….Sir Edmund nailed
it…..rhetoric is fine….speech is necessary…..having a voice is imperative….but
sometimes the good people of this nation have to set aside words and take
action….get busy…..actually DO something…..and there is no better time than the
present…..There was a scene in the Mel Gibson movie, The Patriot, that was very
telling….it was great movie, ….a movie, by the way, which was actually loosely
based on the real life character of Francis Marion, a man they nicknamed the
Swamp Fox, during the American Revolution…..In the movie Gibson’s character
had initially been opposed to the war….he was opposed to a fight with the British
at the onset of the Revolutionary War, but later in the movie he was lamenting his
delay to take action…..he was told by the female lead character, “You have done
nothing for which you should be ashamed”….to which Gibson’s character
responded, “I have done nothing. And for that I am ashamed.”
There IS a time and place for good men and women to set aside talk and to “do”
something…..and it can be scary….it can be daunting to put yourself, your honor
and integrity, and your good name, all on the line by showing up and letting
yourself be counted…..but more than ever in such a time as this we need “giant
killers”…..we need people who can stand and make direct eye contact with
giants…..there is a rabid sense of desperation right now coming from the darkest
places…..not so long ago marchers in so-called pride parade in New York City
marched while chanting “we’re here, we’re queer, and we want your
kids!”….that’s evil showing itself…..just last week a friend of mine was in Seattle
for a gathering of Christians in a public park….they were accosted by progressive
LGBTQ activists and the Mayor chose to blame the Christians…..on our southern
border desperate ranchers and small towns were crushed by an overwhelming tide
of illegal immigrants for the last few years…..major cities, especially in California,
are facing an epidemic of drugs, crime and homeless encampments that are literally
squeezing the life out of once vibrant downtown areas…..I could go on, but you
already know…..there is a desperate wind blowing as if the enemies of the good
are scratching and clawing to get more and more from us…..This great nation, to
include the State of Alabama where I sit right now, is facing a series of challenges
unlike any that we have had in contemporary memory….. There will always be
flares of social upheaval……that’s a given…..the process of give and take in social
norms, or questions of fiscal discipline…..wars and rumors of wars….But it is not
often that we see and feel such tangible calls for societal evolution …..this is a
cause greater than all of us…..BUT…and here’s the good news….we ARE gaining
ground…..we are seeing momentum swing in our direction….as my lovely
Charlene is prone to say, there ARE more of us than there are of them…..but the
time to act is still on us….and truthfully, we would be foolish to sit idle and waste
this momentum…..
But I want to point out that this time we are in is not unique in human
history…..we can get through this but we will have to take out some giants first…..
I believe that America is poised to step into a moment that will set the standard for
generations to come……whether to accept or – hopefully – refuse to accept a “new
normal” – one in which actual civil liberties…..assembly, speech, due process, a
right to confront our accusers, the right to ensure our votes count……all of it could
go away. The debate rages and there are ideas, opinions, and plans from all sides of
the spectrum…..In the middle of it all you may be asking yourself…..how can I
make a difference? Can one person really do anything meaningful….what can I, in
my limited sphere of influence, ever hope to accomplish?...What is happening right
now is “Giant” in its scope……so my question is: are you prepared to be a Giant
Killer?.....Good people who speak up and decide to take action…..even by
themselves or in small numbers have often turned the tide of great moments in
societies throughout history
I feel like I have to draw an analogy to two of my favorite stories from the Bible.
Regardless of anyone’s personal views I believe that the storyline originating in
Numbers 13 has direct application to our current crisis. For context, the Israelites
had just come through years of slavery and the great exodus from Egypt. They
stood on the border of the Promised Land and sent twelve men over the border to
check things out. Everything that they had dreamed of in their quest for a new life
was there; it was a land “flowing with milk and honey”. A people that had been
through so much were on the edge of a new life. But there was a problem: there
were “giants in the land” ready to oppose their progress. It was supposed to be easy
they thought, it was supposed to be a new day, and no one said anything about
having to overcome enemies that looked like that!....there are giants! They said
The twelve spies came back and reported to Moses and the people….ten of them
said that it was simply not doable. The giants were insurmountable. But two men,
Joshua and Caleb, stood up and called on the people to stay the course. But fear
took over, the easy route was chosen, they turned away from the fight, the giants
won without having to do a thing, and the people of Israel wandered in the
wilderness for the next forty years. An entire generation passed away before the
Israelites returned to cross the Jordan and enter the Promised Land…… When they
did finally cross over they still had to fight, it was not any easier because they had
waited. They had simply delayed the inevitable and deferred the hard work to their
children and grandchildren…..I hope you caught that part….fear of giants, led to
wandering in the wilderness, so that the next generation could come back and have
to fight the same giants anyway…..
But you’ve all heard the story of another fight…..just a few generations
later…..David….the least among his family of the least among the tribes…..David
took issue with the fear and fecklessness of the Israelite army when they were
being taunted by the giant warrior Goliath. You all know the story of David…..he
slew the giant….but there were a few aspects of that story that might have never
noticed….we’re told in 1 Samuel 17 that on the way down to the fight David
stopped by a dry creek bed and picked up five smooth stones…..he killed Goliath
with one…..but he was mentally prepared to stay in the fight and sling all five
stones if one was not enough. ….But there is another key point in that
storyline….David was mocked and spurned by his own brother for daring to think
he could fight the giant….the King told him he was too small…. naysayers who
could not imagine the idea of confronting a giant…..David responded, “is there not
a cause?”…..Is there not a cause?...what a great question…..a history…..a way of
life worth fighting for?....something bigger than ourselves…..but David chose to
face the giant, alone at first…..but we read in the storyline that his stand galvanized
his whole nation….his single effort to face the giant rallied the people who then
grabbed the momentum he had helped to create…..and they won!
Look, I don’t care from where you draw your inspiration….a famous movie….a
personal story….an experience of others or of your own….or in this case from a
biblical narrative…..the fact remains that we must have the social and political
will to stand or we will most surely fall…..You can stand….and
maybe….maybe… you will not reach the heights you are attempting but if you
remain seated you most surely not reach them
I believe that the State of Alabama, along with our southeastern neighbors in
Tennessee, Florida, Mississippi, and most of Georgia, are on the cutting edge of
this fight. We are poised, as what are supposed to be the most conservative states
in the nation, to be a catalyst for substantive change and to serve as a bulwark
against the absolute attempts to wreck our nation. ….Make no mistake there are
giants in the land ……but I was not selected to find the easy way out, and in my
opinion sitting idle is the option of fools and cowards…..it is possible to find
simple solutions to hard problems, This is an audience of giant killers…..Having
come this far we must cross over or it will all have been for naught.
US Senator George Allen was once asked about the tough race he was in for the
Senate….his opponent was fighting with every dirty trick possible….it was
mudslinging, it was gross….but Allen said, “Thunder is impressive, but it’s
lightning that does the work”…..he knew…he knew that words sometimes must be
supplanted by meaningful action….so here’s the deal….something that I say often
on this show…..Find your place….find your voice….find one or two others…..go
speak at a public hearing….organize a social media campaign…start your own
podcast….support a strong candidate for office…..run for office yourself……write
a letter to the editor….this is our country and we are called to steward it well.
It is a broad-based strategy of stewardship and it is not easy by any means. But it is
certainly doable – these giants are not insurmountable…..We are not the kind to
turn back….. The world needs some giant-killers.
And that’s a wrap for the Rightside Way!
